Few places on earth have the massive biomass surge each year as Bristol Bay and the Alaska Peninsula. What exists there is a rare thing. Millions, literally millions of pounds of protein swim directly onto land to fertilize this entire region. With readily accessible nitrogen pumping into the system - it is no wonder there are so many huge Rainbow Trout, Char, and other species. One of the problems with this kind of numbers is we cannot visualize them in our minds. Flying over the rivers of Bristol Bay is to see the end result of this phenomena.

10,000 brown bears inhabit this area, because of one thing and for one reason, salmon. Wild bears eat a whole of salmon and thrive, as they have for millennia. It seems life really is about food. To this day there is no place to see bears like the rivers surrounding the region. Some places they are spooky and shy and in other locations they are out in the open, fishing and in turn avoiding us and us them.

The very earth is transformed. The rivers, the trees, the grass, the insects, the small fish, the birds on and on, all the way thru the dirt. This rich dirt, fertile and explosive for life does just that each summer. Lets add up the numbers.. 8,549,973 that is million and only the sockeyes. With a little extrapolation, the average sockeye weighing 7 pounds, that is 59,849,811 million pounds of biomass reaching all the way into the mountain streams.

Custom Trip by our family!

All to often lodges I hear lodge owners say they don't like fishing. I ponder this and wonder why they stay in the sportfishing business. At Rapids Camp Lodge every single member of the family loves to fish. Below are a couple of photos from this summer of Jerry Shults, Amy Herrig, Dan Herrig, Gavin and Kylie. When guests come visit Rapids Camp Lodge they get to talk too and have a real fishing family help them design the perfect custom trip. What is meant by a custom trip? How does this improve my experience? How do I know where I want to go or what I like to do? These are three questions worth asking and finding the answers to. A “custom trip” means just that, as a long time guide at RCL I pride myself on having the ability to communicate with our guests. You need to and will know exactly what the prime choices are for each day based on weather, season, and the personal preference of each group, or individual. We will give you multiple choices, and you choose what you will prefer each day. Do you want to hike? Do you want to fish from a boat? Do you want to do an adventure raft trip? Maybe you had a long hike that day and prefer to stay close to the lodge one day and hunt trophies on the NakNek River. It is not necessary to have ANY knowledge of the region in order to intelligently make a daily selection. You speak directly with Dan Herrig, our head guide and lodge manager. Dan has over 10 years of experience in the Bristol Bay region. We tease him but the fact is Dan is a smart guy! If you have no clue whether you would prefer mouse fishing, or streamer fishing, or if you would prefer a float trip to a hike , we help with information. We know every option as if we were there yesterday , and often we were! We can describe every aspect that concerns you. Common concerns are: How’s the hike? What is the average size of the fish? What methods will we use? How many miles do we float? Etc. These are the questions from excited guests who are anxious for what the next day will bring. Dan’s mellow demeanor puts everyone at ease during these informal nightly planning meetings, and he guides everyone through that decision.
As part of the experience let our guides teach you new methods and techniques. Alaska is a lot different than most trout-fishing places. The short season ensures aggressively feeding rainbows and huge runs of salmon. For those with Alaska experience or simply advanced in their abilities, we as guides know who they should be helping. We spend our day making sure who needs help gets it, or once you are comfortable we become your personal photographer! Our motto is “ If you’re happy, we’re happy!” The high quality experiences had at RCL is a direct result of our high level of commitment to open lines of communication. It really with a custom trip, specifically tailored by you with our advice.
